The Urban Mom Collective is proud to endorse Vice President Kamala Harris as the next President of the United States. The prospect of having the first Black Mama in office is a historic milestone that transcends the dreams of our ancestors and represents a transformative moment for our nation.

Vice President Harris’s journey—from being raised by a single mother in Oakland, CA, who instilled pride in her Jamaican and Indian heritage while nurturing her understanding of Blackness—resonates deeply with us. Her story is a powerful testament to the strength and resilience of Black mothers and reflects the diversity of motherhood, which is a cornerstone of this country.

Throughout her career, Vice President Harris has been a steadfast supporter of Black moms, including those within our Urban Mom Collective network who have been impacted by gun violence. Her commitment to our cause was clearly demonstrated when she took the time to meet with us during a convening at the White House earlier this year. Her willingness to listen, engage, and advocate for our communities is a testament to her dedication as both a leader and a mother.

Our endorsement of the Harris-Walz ticket is grounded in their strong focus on the issues that directly affect our communities. The campaign’s commitment to economic policies that support working mothers—such as paid family leave, affordable childcare, and job training programs—is essential for the economic empowerment of mothers of color. These policies are vital in helping our families build financial stability and independence, laying the groundwork for a brighter future.

The Harris-Walz campaign’s emphasis on improving educational opportunities for children, particularly in underfunded communities, aligns with our mission. Quality education is the foundation of a prosperous future for children of color, and supporting parents in accessing these opportunities is critical.

Moreover, the campaign’s prioritization of maternal health, especially for women of color who face disproportionately higher risks, mirrors our mission to ensure that all mothers receive the care and support they deserve. Their commitment to expanding access to quality healthcare is crucial in addressing the health disparities that impact our communities.

In addition, the Harris-Walz campaign has demonstrated a deep commitment to addressing gun violence and prioritizing criminal justice reform—issues that are critically important to Black and Brown mothers who are too often affected by these crises. Their focus on cracking down on gun violence and ensuring that justice is equitable speaks directly to the needs of our communities.

The campaign’s investment in communities of color through infrastructure improvements, affordable housing initiatives, and small business support is another reason we stand with them. These initiatives create environments where mothers and their families can thrive, not just survive.

By endorsing the Harris-Walz campaign, we are supporting leaders who understand that the unique challenges faced by mothers of color must be addressed through comprehensive and inclusive policies. Their intersectional approach to policymaking aligns with our values and our mission to uplift marginalized communities.

As Black mamas united in our advocacy for change, we are excited to endorse Vice President Harris and fully support this campaign as a Founding Partner of the MAMA FOR KAMALA movement. This movement is dedicated to galvanizing mamas and mama figures who are committed to electing the first Mama President!

Together with our partners, we aim to mobilize 5,000 mamas to make 5 million calls and work directly with the Harris-Walz campaign to mobilize voters in the swing states needed to win this election.

The Urban Mom Collective National Black Mom Coalition will be focusing on civic engagement training, spreading facts to our moms about the campaign, and driving voter registration efforts. We are committed to calling swing states and engaging mamas across the country. To ensure our voices are heard, we’re hosting Tupperware potlucks where we’ll phone bank and make sure the world knows we are MAMAS FOR KAMALA. Black moms are dedicated to driving change in this country, and we are ready to lead the charge.

Ariel DeNey Rainey, CEO and Founder of Urban Mom Collective National Black Mom Coalition and MAMA FOR KAMALA, shared, "This election is crucial for all mamas, but it holds special significance for Black mamas, who are often the most unheard voices and are not always given a seat at the table when it comes to policies and opportunities to impact our communities. I am incredibly motivated as an organizer and leader to work alongside other Black mom organizers and leaders to get MOMALA into office!"
